It was quite the summer! Summer 2017 Training Recap

Language Liaisons hosted two Interpreting Refresher Course sessions for the first time ever! Thirty-two experienced interpreters gathered to refresh their 40-hour training and we received excellent feedback. Our two wonderful trainers presented the course: Leah Lightcap and Ireida Grabill. The course included the National Code of Ethics, interpreting techniques, note-taking skills, interpreting in emergency situations, mental health encounters, palliative care encounters and more. We were able to discuss some challenging real-life situations and practice our skills while role-playing. It was described by a participant as very precise and to the point, organized and enthusiastic delivery.

We were also very excited to collaborate with Master Trainer Marjory Bancroft and present “It Breaks My Heart: Interpreting for Trauma.” The main objectives for this one-day version of the program were to be an informed trauma interpreter, to understand the role of the interpreter specifically in trauma encounters, to be aware of vicarious trauma, boundaries and culture in trauma encounters and create a self-care plan. It was a packed day! So many of us walk into these situations without having the knowledge, preparation or the tools to be the best voice we can be as we also take care of ourselves. Thank you to all of you who partnered with us and participated in this powerful event. It was exciting to see local professionals, local hospital staff and professionals that traveled a ways coming together for this professional development that empowered us and impacted our collective professional identity.

Lastly, another 40-hour Community Interpreter International Training session is coming up NEXT WEEK! It begins on October 17th, 2017 and takes place in Newark, Delaware. This is an excellent training for novice interpreters, but it is also CAREER-CHANGING for seasoned interpreters! We’ve had several experienced (and even nationally certified) interpreters tell us they wish they had taken TCII to start with! If you haven’t had a 40-hour training in over 5 years… then it is time! Our field has evolved incredibly in the last 5 years and you need to be updated and empowered. How current and efficient is your interpreter strategy toolbox now? If you are not sure, come join us!
We still have some spots open for our upcoming session. Click here or call us today to register and receive more information for this or a future training at 302-521-7626. You may also email us at admin@languageliaisons.com
